A DIY SOS Build That Meant More Than Most

When the DIY SOS producers approached Timber Frame Ireland to step in as their new timber frame supplier, there was very little time to spare.

But after hearing Hannah Leonard’s story, there was never any doubt.

Hannah suffered life-changing injuries following a road traffic accident in Sicily in October 2024. The Leonard family’s home needed a significant transformation to provide an accessible, comfortable environment where Hannah could continue her recovery surrounded by those she loves.

As our Managing Director, Declan Bourke, previously shared:

“It was an immediate yes – we only had to hear Hannah’s story once.”

“This wasn’t simply another construction project. It was an opportunity to help a family fulfil their promise to bring their daughter home.”

Who Supplied the Timber Frame for DIY SOS Ireland?

Timber Frame Ireland, based in Donegal, was appointed as the new timber frame supplier for DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland, providing the closed-panel timber frame extension and roof structure for Hannah Leonard’s family home in Bray.

Our team was responsible for the design, independent structural engineering, manufacture, delivery, installation and certification of the new extension.

With an incredibly ambitious nine-day site programme, every hour counted.

Once the final drawings were approved, we had approximately one week to manufacture the entire structure in our Donegal factory before transporting it across the country to Bray.

Declan recalls:

“People probably don’t realise how much happens before a panel ever arrives on site.”

“The dimensions, the layout, the final design, the engineering – then to manufacture; everything is meticulously planned.”

And the clock didn’t stop there!

The installation was originally scheduled for a full day, but with site access delayed until approximately 2pm, the team suddenly had less than half a working day to complete the erection.

By the end of Day 1 (in just a few daylight hours!), the insulated and airtight timber frame extension was erected, and the roof was on – ready for follow-on trades to get straight to work.

Our factory-fitted service cavity meant electricians and plumbers could commence first-fix installations without compromising the airtightness layer – a major advantage on a project where every minute mattered.

Manufactured off-site. Delivered to Bray. Erected on Day 1.

That’s the beauty of modern closed-panel timber frame construction!

NEW: Behind-the-Scenes Photos from the DIY SOS Bray Build!

We’ve added more photographs from our time on the DIY SOS Ireland site, capturing some of the incredible work that went into bringing this project together.

From the manufacture of the timber frame panels in our Donegal factory to the deliveries, crane lifts, installation and teamwork on site, these photographs offer a little glimpse into what viewers can expect tonight.

And there’s still plenty more to come!

We’re especially looking forward to finally sharing the finished photographs of Hannah’s new extension and the completed Leonard family home once the episode has aired.

We’ve been waiting to show you the final transformation, and we think you’ll agree that the results are something special.

Hundreds of Volunteers. One Incredible Transformation.

Although we’re immensely proud of our team’s contribution, what made this DIY SOS project so memorable was the extraordinary community spirit.

Hundreds of volunteers, tradespeople, suppliers and local businesses came together, donating their time, materials and expertise to help the Leonard family.

From early mornings to late evenings, everyone had the same goal.

As Declan reflected:

“You remember the atmosphere. You remember everyone pulling together. You remember why you were there.”

“And that’s exactly what DIY SOS is all about.”

The Moment We’ve All Been Waiting For

One of the most rewarding updates since completing the build was hearing the wonderful news that Hannah was preparing to return home.

Her dad, Kevin Leonard, had previously shared the words that stayed with so many of us throughout the project:

“The finish line is in sight, and Hannah will be coming home.”

To know that our work helped make that possible means more to our team than any television appearance ever could.

As parents ourselves, this project struck a chord from the very beginning, and it’s an experience we’ll never forget.
